The Qualities of a Good Manager

Think about the managers or leaders you know or have worked for? Why were they good leaders? It’s likely your list will share many items with this one:

Fundamental Skills of Outstanding Leadership:
  • Adaptability
  • Coaching & Development
  • Communication
  • Decision Making
  • Inspiring
  • Integrity
  • Persuasion
  • Planning
  • Relationship
  • Teamwork
  • Vision / Strategy
Good managers must:
  • Have to work from a solid core of integrity.
  • Have a clear vision and strategy that they can communicate.
  • Be relationship builders to manage the emotional temperature of their team and the individuals within it.
  • Be a good persuader to get things done.
  • Adaptable to changing circumstances.

Being the boss doesn’t mean you aren’t a team member, so being a team player is key, as is the ability to coach and develop the team. Management isn’t always democratic so decision-making and planning are vital. And, of course, you need to inspire the team to make the vision real.

In the next post we’ll look at the management styles and flexing.
